Held in partnership with associations of beekeepers, the program of Apiculture and Meliponiculture aims to support local communities, providing rational use of biodiversity, together with the preservation of nature through the development of apiculture and meliponiculture, with native and exotic bee species. The program is an important alternative for small and medium-sized farmers, once Klabin strengthens the associations that select the beekeepers, doing this activity their main source of income.

The program has 34 beekeepers that are part of 3 associations in the municipalities of Telêmaco Borba, Arapoti and Ortigueira, providing increased revenue for local producers and associations.

B - Description of practice

1- BACKGROUND

From a wide territorial approach, it was noted a need to interface between actions, programs and initiatives that generate positive impacts to the territory and to the communities and that also represent gains in tangible and intangible assets for Klabin.

The lack of local cooperatives for forest products was one of the "gaps" identified by the company in the process of local empowerment in the regions near to the Monte Alegre farm, in the Western region of Paraná State

Beekeeping activity in this territory possessed a valuable history with respect to time and amount of people involved, and because it was present in all municipalities in the region. It was also an activity that held great potential for expansion, since the region has a vast area of forest cultivation. In 2005, we conducted a pilot project for a best definition.

2- MAIN GOAL

Harness the potential of the rich flora of the forest areas, preserve biodiversity and promote the generation of income in local communities.

Specific goals:

•Provide extra income during the off season of the forest to beekeepers and associations;

•Contribute to the growth of rational and sustainable beekeeping in the region;

•Contribute to the process of generating jobs and income improvement of beekeepers;

•Enable support for the productive chain of beekeeping with cutting-edge technologies.

3 - ADOPTED SOLUTION

Klabin started the program in partnership with the Association of Horticulture and Beekeeping of Telêmaco Borba-ATHA, soon extending the partnership to other two associations in the municipalities of Ortigueira and Arapoti. Through the program, the company enables support to the productive chain structuring the rational and controlled use of natural resources, using forests to boost the development of productive chains that bring benefits to the environment and to the communities, especially in the complementary generation of income, operating a processing unit that prepares and distributes the honey and its derivatives in accordance to the legal and market requirements.

Beekeepers are selected by partner associations, receive professional training and diversify their productive activities, generating income for their families. Trainings for multipliers agents of controlled breeding practices of native bee colonies are also carried out, in partnership with the associations. Within the scope of the program, at least two training events are carried out for beekeepers per year, where experts conduct courses for members.  In addition, the program trains producers to adopt and standardize procedures for visitation and handling of hives, adjusting the schedule of activities without interference in forestry activities.

Partner associations also provide equipment, through fundraising by the Government, involving the municipalities, the Paraná Institute of technical assistance and Rural extension-EMATER and the Ministry of agrarian development-MDA.

Among the actions of the program, the supply of appropriate technical assistance to beekeepers involved, the work of breeding Queens, marketing and products trade.

The program assists in the selection and definition of viable areas for deployment of the apiaries/meliponary. One of the stages of this work is related to safety in the handling and to minimize possible accidents with bees. For this end, there are bait boxes that are used to catch migratory swarms that lodge in places inhabited by people. Bait boxes simulate the conditions of a beehive, which attracts bees with propolis and lemongrass, offering shelter to the bug. To avoid the risk of accidents, the bait boxes are transferred to apiaries.

In addition to the beekeeping program, work with adapted exotic bees, investments in the creation of native bees, known as indigenous, meliponines or meliponidae are done.

4 - OBTAINED RESULTS

Before the implementation of the program, only 04 beekeepers developed the activity in the region. Currently there are 34 local beekeepers, with 50 apiaries installed, with an average of 25 hives in each apiary. Since the emergence of the program, the increase of revenue for the Association of Telêmaco Borba was 80% and for associations of Arapoti and Ortigueira was approximately 30%. Between 2006 and 2014, approximately 34 tons of honey were produced.

With the support of partners, Association of Beekeepers of Telêmaco Borba and Cooperative Caminhos do Tibagi, the program operates a processing unit that prepares and distributes the honey and its derivatives in accordance with the legal and market requirements.

Another advantage is that the high-quality honey opens new job opportunities in the area of non-wood as there is potential use of plants in areas of the company and partners, valuing the non-timber. Beekeepers earn professional qualification and diversify its activities, with greater income generation for their families.

The actions of the program are, however, aimed to ensure the preservation of native bees through the rational creation, multiplying them through the division of colonies. The work with native species contributes effectively to the promotion of the preservation of ecosystems, since they are responsible for 40 to 90% of the pollination of plant species present.

22 different species of native bees have already been identified, among them the Jataí, Iraí and Mandaguarí, considered honey-producing of excellent quality and even with therapeutic properties. The Mandaçaia (Melipona quadrifasciata), Brazilian native species, part of the list of endangered species, can be found in the forests where the program takes place, in the city of Telêmaco Borba.

5 - RESOURCES NEEDED

Beekeepers and associations finance the necessary equipment for the program.

Klabin supplies signs, stickers and a vehicle for monitoring the program.

The team responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the program has an operations manager and a technical supervisor.

6 - TRANSFER

Initially Klabin had a partnership with just one association of beekeepers, expanding the work later along the other two associations. It is a part of the plan of action of the expansion program for the productive units of Klabin in Santa Catarina and São Paulo. The company is currently in the phase of gathering information for better plan actions.

The Forestry Company Vale do Corisco Ltd. sought aid from Klabin and wants to start the same activity, with the program as a basis.

7 - LESSONS LEARNED

Positive factors of the practice:

•Stimulate the historical trajectory of the region for the production of honey;

•Responsiveness of producers to the Program;

•Incentives for forest productivity of the area (due to factors such as climate, soil and heat stroke);

•Constant technical qualification of activities always brings innovations in good manufacturing practices;

•Possibility to provide professional growth and beekeeping activity in the region;

•Better use and appreciation of the potential of the existing flora in areas of the company;

•Contribution to the increase of income of the beekeepers;

•Support for the participation of company initiatives and projects in the areas of citizenship and social responsibility.

The program exceeded the initial expectations, because initially would be conducted only on the Monte Alegre farm (Telêmaco Borba, Paraná). However, today, it is present in various municipalities in the region where the company operates, in addition to the planned expansion to the States of Santa Catarina and São Paulo.

Critical Factors:

•The absence of public policies encouraging the initiative;

•Impossibility of meeting all the demand presented by the several beekeepers who are looking for the company to join the program;

•Difficulties in raising awareness of the beekeepers to conduce the activity in a professional way, because beekeeping is still conducted informally among some groups of beekeepers.

A visit to the practice is available all year long, with preference for the months march and april.

Number of visitors: up to 04 people per visit.
