The practice aims to prevent possible damages caused by hail and late frost on the fruiting and consequently in the production of the orchards. For development, control and evaluation, the system was implemented in a plums producing property, located in the city of Fraiburgo-SC. The hail and frost damage prevention system consists in the use of anti-hail netting and a sprinkler irrigation system. The number of properties in Alto Vale do Rio do Peixe, which simultaneously use the two technologies, is approximately 15 (fifteen), being concentrated on the municipalities of Fraiburgo, Videira, Pinheiro Preto, Rio das Antas, and Tangará. 

 

The results of the project are obtained by comparing losses and damages caused in previous harvests. On Mr. Geraldo Gaio's property, during the harvest of 2013/2014, losses with frost and hail reached R$30,000.00 and in the 2015/2016 harvest, they exceeded R$44,000.00. In the 2016/2017 harvest season, during which the system is operating, no damages were recorded regarding bad weather conditions of this nature.  This project is part of the SC Rural Program that supports productive investments for the improvement of production quality, food security, productivity, competitiveness and family income.

B - Description of the practice

 

1- BACKGROUND

Stone fruit orchards are exposed to extreme weather risks such as late frost and hail during the vegetative cycle. These factors reduce productivity and the production final quality. It also causes damages to the plants and decreases the families' income. The region has a long history of losses in fruit production. Namely: hail in 2011 that caused total losses of 20% of the fruit production in Fraiburgo. In this harvest (2016/2017), the 1677 hectares of stone fruits (peach, nectarine and plum) located in the Alto Vale do Rio do Peixe, were affected by losses of the order of 30% which corresponds to a financial loss of approximately R$15,000,000.00 (fifteen million reais).

  

2- GENERAL OBJECTIVE

Prevent any damage caused by hail and late frost in the fruiting and production of stone fruits (peach, nectarine and plum).

Specific Objectives: 

  • Producing quality fruits, without damage by hail and possible sunburn;
  • Training producers on the benefits of long-term investment in preventing bad weather conditions such as hail and frost.

 

3 - SOLUTION ADOPTED

Concerns about the climatic effects in the Planalto Serrano and the Midwest region are one of the focal points of Epagri's extension and research in the area of fruit farming. Training courses for farmers on frost and hail prevention are regular and it was precisely in one of these events that the interest of farmers in the anti-hail netting and the irrigation system for extreme weather control has raised. To make the idea come true, other meetings on the equipment installation were carried out with the presence of Epagri's extension agents and region fruit farmers. Until the project was implemented, there were eight (8) technical visits. 

Among the region's fruit farmers, Mr. Geraldo Gaio has shown interest in investing in the use of this technology in his property. The project was implemented in a one (1) hectare orchard area. The best period to install the system is from February to March, right before the first low temperatures in the region and with the crop in dormancy. The average term for installing the two technologies is around 18 days. 

The first step in the implementation of the anti-hail netting is to carry out a preliminary survey of the situation of the orchard. Dimensions such as plant height and spacing influence the number and length of the posts. After the calculations, treated eucalyptus poles are fixed into the soil in rows with 6.0 m height each 15 m, moored with wire, wire rope and galvanized ratchets. The netting is placed and fixed in such a way that they are well stretched and shaped like a chapel. The use of anti-hail netting also contribute to avoid or reduce the incidence of fruit burn under the netting, providing a superior quality fruit when compared to the ones cultivated in a conventional environment. The netting used is black and has a shading level of 18%. 

The sprinkler irrigation system is composed of pipes, sprinklers, pump assembly and posts to support the cover netting. Initially the sizing of the quantitative needs of materials is based on the distance of the water catchment location and the total area to be irrigated. In possession of the materials, the placement of the pipes and fixation of the sprinklers, and tests of the network begin. This technology for frosts control was researched and approved by the Cetrevi (Training Center of Videira - Epagri).

The guidance on the management of the systems is performed by Epagri's technicians. When it comes to the irrigation system, the producer should monitor the temperature. It is advisable to test the equipment between 0 and 1°C and then switch on if the temperature is below 0°C. On the other hand, the anti-hail netting is fixed. However, it is recommended to open it at the flowering season (pollination), in order to guarantee bees access. At other times of the year, there is no need to open it. 

On Mr. Geraldo Gaio's property, the Epagri's extension agents, the family of the producer and the people hired to carry out the work were involved in the process. Recently, by the end of the cold weather and after hail in the region, some extension agents from surrounding municipalities made an on-site check on the new technologies operation.

  

4 - RESULTS ACHIEVED

The following results were obtained through the project "Anti-hail netting and Frost Control System":

  • In this harvest – 2016/2017 – the orchard is in perfect conditions, without damages caused by the bad weather conditions. Production is expected to reach productivity ratios and the quality required by market standards. On the other hand, other fruit farmers in the Fraiburgo region had significant hail losses. It is estimated that losses in plums and peaches production are of 29.35% or R$4,992,597.00;
  • Quantitatively, the project result is significant when compared to previous years. In the 2015/2016 harvest, there were significant losses due to the late frosts in the order of 29,750 kg of plums, causing an approximate financial loss of R$44,000.00. In the 2013/2014 harvest, there were hail losses of about 20,000 kg of plums, causing an approximate financial loss of R$30,000.00;
  • The practice was implemented in 15 properties in the cities of Fraiburgo, Videira, Pinheiro Preto, Rio das Antas and Tangará;
  • The joint system was installed in 15 ha of orchards. With an additional eight (8) ha orchard where only the irrigation system by sprinkler was installed.

 

5 - REQUIRED RESOURCES

For the installation of one (1) hectare (10,000 m2) are necessary:

 

Human Resources

  • A professional in the agricultural area for technical guidance;
  • Four (4) people for three (3) days as workforce in the installation of the irrigation system;
  • Ten (10) people for 18 days for the netting installation. 

Material resources for the irrigation system (1ha)

The conventional sprinkler irrigation system for 1.00 hectare is composed of: 96 emitters/connectors; 11 3" rigid PVC pipes; 190 2" rigid PVC pipes; 9 galvanized steel pipes; 4 groove joint reduction 3"x 2"; 12 2" quick-coupling ball valve; 4 4"x 3" ; 4 transition m / f 3"x 2"; 4 groove output lead 2"; 5 quick-coupling 3"x 2" tongue/groove reduction; 13 ball register 2" ER; 96 plastic coupling 2"x ¾" sprinkler outlet; 96 CTO 25 mm x ¾" weldable adapter; 96 25 mm x ½ " threaded weldable coupling; 32 25mm agricultural pipe; 1 quick-coupling 5"x 4" tongue/groove reduction; 1 700/3 motor pump; 5 orange KP 5"x30 m suction hose; 1 single nipple 5; 1 threaded APU valve 5; 2 5" hose clamp; 1 3" bronze gate valve; 1 quick-coupling 5"x 3" initial coupling ; 1 5" quick-coupling double bend; 2 18mm x 25m thread seal tape; and 1 PVC adhesive bottle w / 1756 brush.
Total Implementation Cost of the Irrigation System in the Control of Frost (including workforce): R$ 26.029,39

 

Material resources for the netting (1ha)

Orchard protection system with anti-hail netting: 11,000 m² of black mesh 18%; 6 rolls of galvanized wire (1,000 m); 1 roll of 7 strands wire rope (250 m); 100 galvanized ratchets; 60 galvanized anchor bolts; 176 eucalyptus treated 6m height pillars; 10 boxes of galvanized clamps (1,000 un.); 2,000 PVC clips; and 2,000 PVC claws.

Total value of the two practices: R$ 74,273.39.

 

 

6 - PRACTICE TRANSFER

 

As the worked areas are located at the properties, it facilitates the access to information and increases the impact of the research actions in the communities and their immediate incorporation in the heart of palm agrobusiness productive chain. These areas were previously selected with the participation of extension agents to act as a convergence point in the transfer of results. Several fruit farmers in the region are adopting this practice as a solution to reduce the damage caused by late frost and hail. With the help of Epagri, the practice has been applied with proper technical support. So far, 15 producers have used the two techniques together (frost control with irrigation and anti-hail netting), covering five (5) municipalities of Alto Vale do Rio do Peixe (Fraiburgo, Videira, Rio das Antas, Pinheiro Preto, and Tangará).

 

 

7 -LESSONS LEARNED

For this practice to be consolidated as a relevant technology for the sector, in addition to the fruit farmer's decision-making process, high fundings will be necessary. The factors that contributed to the use of this technology, undoubtedly were the reduction of losses caused by extreme weather, in addition to courses and specific technical meetings for producers and technicians.

The main hindrance is the high costs and necessary investments for the application of technology. Without a credit line for this purpose, the proponents can not afford to invest their own resources. Producers have been using the regular line of credit offered by official banks of Pronaf Mais Alimentos (Pronaf More Foods), and in the case of Mr. Geraldo Gaio, part of it was his own resources.

 

8 - ORIGINALITY OF PRACTICE

The technology used for frosts control was researched and approved by the Cetrevi (Training Center of Videira - Epagri) through the guidance of the agronomist Valerio Pietro Mondin. This is an original practice.  On the other hand, the protection of the orchards to control hail was adapted from the apple tree crop.

  

 

 

Visits with the purpose of knowing the practice of frost control should happen in the appropriate season in which they occur (winter). On the other hand, the anti-hail netting can be visited at any time, during business hours, from Monday to Friday, with groups of approximately 30 people.
