The project of integrated production of Onion-PIC aims at the development of research and rural extension actions that guide the producers for the use of good agricultural practices and adoption of integrated production in onion culture, activity developed by farmers and of crucial socioeconomic importance for the state of Santa Catarina and Brazil.

This new approach is emerging as a modern reflection on how to best administer the agroecosystems, where even today for the most part, inefficient and outdated management systems have been adopted. The studies indicate the possibility of rationalizing the use of inputs (fertilizers and pesticides) without hindering the increase of productivity, with the reduction in production costs and the production of safe food for consumption.

B - Description of practice

 

1 -BACKGROUND

The State of Santa Catarina is the largest national producer of onion bulbs with approx. 10,000 families involved in the activity. However, in most of the areas inefficient and outdated cropping systems have been adopted.

Intensive and/or excessive use of agrochemicals, fertilizers, pesticides and soil tickler without appropriate technical parameters, support the promotion of nutritional imbalances and increase risks of contamination of the producer, the environment and the consumer. Contributes to the current economic situation, the strong intervention carried out by private companies of marketing of inputs and "technical assistance", whose economic interest overlap, sometimes, the real technical needs of the cultivation.

The commercialization of production is subject to middlemen, keeping the farmer hostage of this system. EPAGRI, along with its partners, touched by this reality and aware of the responsibility with the project, guides food production through the use of good farming practices which allow the traceability of products aiming at implementation of onion production in integrated systems.

 

2 - GENERAL OBJECTIVE

Develop research and diffusion actions as a basis to implement the integrated production of onions in the State of Santa Catarina, through the use of good agronomic practices coming from existing or to be developed technologies, based on the regulation of ecosystem, preservation of natural RESOURCES and minimization of inconvenient side effects resulting from agricultural activity.

Specific objectives:

  • Develop strategies for efficient and rational use of soil, water and fertilizers in Integrated production systems;
  • Develop research in the area of integrated management of pests and diseases, with emphasis on the rationalization of the use of plant protection and control products;
  • Develop and evaluate models for prediction of downy mildew, main disease of onion culture in Integrated production system;
  • Monitor the production of quality food through field books, directed to the farmer, auditors and technicians, focusing on traceability for integrated production;
  • Develop Technical Bulletin on soil management and fertilizer for onion in PI (integrated production) and the Manual of good agricultural practices, pesticide residue monitoring, training of human resources and the dissemination of cultivation techniques; 
  • Establish a permanent reference EPAGRI unit – Experimental Station of Ituporanga;
  • Establish, in at least two rural properties, reference units. In them the techniques and good agricultural practices (BPA's) developed by the research will be evaluated, and among others, the parameters of productivity and profitability of the activity;
  • Perform field days annually on the reference units.

 

3 - SOLUTION ADOPTED 

To achieve the proposed objectives, EPAGRI (Experimental Station of Ituporanga-EEItu), in partnership with the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina – Campus Rio do Sul, conducted field experiments in the areas of plant science, soil fertility, plant nutrition, plant health and genetic improvement. 

The technologies developed, after being tested experimentally, are "validated" in agricultural properties in which the demonstration Units are established and transfer of technology (UDTT's). In these units the BPA's and field books are tested, which enable traceability and possibility of future certification, as well as productive and economic aspects observed. In the harvest of onion bulbs UDTT's, they are tested for residues of pesticides. 

The dissemination of techniques for the rural community has been accomplished through field days and training courses and in the scientific world, through the publication of articles in journals and abstracts in congresses.

 

4 - RESULTS ACHIEVED

In farms with different technological levels, where cultivation systems have been established based on integrated production and field books tested, productivity over eight tons per hectare compared to traditional crops was observed. Integrated production system, reduced the number of applications and/or toxicity of fungicides and insecticides used in farming. No significant residues of pesticides were detected in onion bulbs collected in crops under integrated production.

In 2015, in addition to papers presented in conferences and journals, and field day in agricultural property, a folder was published and a training course for technicians held on the BPA's and integrated production of onions and other vegetables. It is expected from 2016, annual field days in UDTT's established in the municipalities of Ituporanga, Atalanta and Alfredo Wagnerand also the development of the technical standard of integrated production of onions for MAPA. In addition, the development of other folders, the publication of the BPA's Manual and field books, and courses aimed at technicians in integrated production of Onions.

The project is financed with resources from FAPESC and MAPA. Among the entities involved representatives of associations of producers of onions at national level (ANACE) and State (APROCESC), as well as local merchants.

The project was presented in 2014 and 2015, in the meeting of onion sector Chamber of the State of Santa Catarina. In 2015, was also presented at the 1st State Rural Development Seminar, organized by the FETAESC (Federation of rural workers Farmers of the State of Santa Catarina) and in the IV Academic Journey of Agronomy of IFC-Rio do Sul Campus-SC.

As the development of BPA's and integrated production of Onion consolidates a process, namely, the development and ongoing review of the practices and techniques in accordance to the social-environmental reality (for example, current legislation). They are repeatedly validated year after year. Once a technique developed is considered by the technical group of researchers as valid, itis driven to reference units, and disclosed by researchers and extension workers. It is observed that by the nature of the rural environment, the adoption of the techniques occurs gradually, either by the producer or awareness by legal force, following the example of increased supervision over use of phytosanitary products, and more recently, the demand for traceability of the food trade.

 

5 - RESOURCES NEEDED

Technical team: formed by 17 Agronomists-Researchers (8 with a doctorate; 02 with a master's degree), Professors of higher education (02 with PhD) and Rural extension agents (4 with undergraduate level; 01 with master's degree); Chemist (01 with masters degree); Agricultural technicians (02 with undergraduate level); and field agents (16 collaborators).

Physical Structure:The Experimental Station of Ituporanga of EPAGRI, has a physical area of 62 ha for the conduct of field surveys, production of seeds and seedlings, environmental preservation and reforestation, agricultural equipment and machinery. Its headquarters comprises a built area of 2,036 m ², of which 992 m ² is intended for the technical and administrative area and laboratory – laboratory of analysis of soils and plant tissues and plant pathology lab-the rest being to support research activities. Researchers and, in particular, the rural extension agents, have vehicles at their disposal. Partner, Santa Catarina Federal Institute-Rio do Sul Campus also features physical area and laboratories to support activities that are being developed in the project.

The Agronomists and agricultural technicians of municipal offices of EPAGRI, in Ituporanga, Atalanta and Alfredo Wagner, among others of the administration of rural extension, have actively supported the proposal, being responsible for the Demonstration Units of transfer of technology (UDTT's) and field days. In 2014, two UDTT's were establishedin Ituporanga and Atalanta, each with 0.5 hectares. In 2015, the initiative included the municipality of Alfredo Wagner.

In these UDTT "s, inputs, are provided to farmers as well as technical transferences for the conduct of farming and trained using the field book.

 

6 - TRANSFER

It is intended in the coming years, to disseminate and extend the techniques to other farms. To this end, UDTTs will continue to be established in the Experimental Station of Ituporanga and in agricultural properties, as well as field days conducted. The training of technicians and farmers in integrated production of Onions will be of fundamental importance, as well as the disclosure through lectures, brochures and in the media.

In 2015, the project was disclosed at the Ministry of Agriculture stand, during the Exposuper of Joinville/SC.

 

7 - LESSONS LEARNED

For the Good Agricultural Practices and  System Integrated of the Onion Production  can be disseminated in the State of Santa Catarina, there is a need of awareness, involvement and cooperation of the various actors involved in the production chain of onion, whether public or private. In particular, there is need for cooperation between research agents, extension and technical assistance, trade unions and rural associations, municipalities and their rural development departments, credit agents (banks and cooperatives), distribution and marketing networks (CEASA's, wholesalers and supermarkets ), and official supervisory bodies, among others.

Preliminary results indicate the possibility of increased productivity of culture, with less risk to human health, which will guarantee to the producer the commercialization of the product in an increasingly demanding market.

 

8 - ORIGINALITY OF THE PRACTICE

The "Agricultural Integrated Production System" (AIPS) started in Brazil with the integrated fruit production (IFP), in 2001, by requirement of the European Community market.

Integrated production, today, is a big sustainable technological advance made available and articulated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) in partnership with CNPq, INMETRO, EMBRAPA, Brazilian universities, State institutions of agricultural research and extension, producer associations and cooperatives, institutions for the support of the agricultural sector, the private sector and suppliers of agricultural inputs.

The success achieved by FIP was extended to other projects within the same model and with similar procedures. Among these, the EPAGRI is a pioneer in the development of integrated production of apples and bananas, and of projects in progress with onion, tomato and cassava.

 

There is the possibility of visits and the best time takes place in the month of October-Monday to Friday (8:00 to 10:00 and 14:00 to 16:00 h) Maximum number of visitors at a time: 30 (thirty)
