SPECIFIC IMPLEMENTATION AREA: Micro-region of Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná Basin 3, Western Paraná.

B - Practice Description

1- BACKGROUND

The western region/PR has always been a major producer of food, but also uses intensely agrochemicals. Thus, one of its major challenges is the implementation of technologies for sustainable agricultural production.

In this context, homeopathy, as affordable and proven results science, has contributed significantly toward sustainability. In Brazil, the use of homeopathy in agriculture is authorized and regulated since 1999.

The major environmental imbalance and the constant attacks of pests and diseases, together with lack of viable and affordable alternatives, is what made the bet and the option for the use of homeopathy.

Mastitis is an example: it reaches constantly and repeatedly dairy farming. In the chemical treatment (allopathic) costs are high, the product (milk) is contaminated and the results are limited. With the homeopathic, treatment it is much more efficient, without side effects (contaminants) and lower cost (reduced 70%). In the intensive poultry farming (large poultry houses with over 20 thousand birds) the use of homeopathy has reduced the mortality of over 50%.

2- GENERAL OBJECTIVE

Promoting knowledge and spreading the use of homeopathy in agriculture in a participatory and accessible, providing greater autonomy and income for family farmers, with lower production costs in order to produce healthy food, environmental balance and the animal and human welfare.

3 - ADOPTED SOLUTION

The process is carried out through the following instruments:

a) Basic courses of two days in communities (groups) on the principles and the use of homeopathy in agriculture for farmers, including theory and practice (how to prepare and use homeopathic medicines). The course content includes: a brief history of homeopathic science; introduction of miasma theory and the laws of healing, homeopathic repertory; Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia; homeopathy in plants and animals; integrative homeopathy; medical materials and case study.

b) Technical assistance to families, with guidance on the use of homeopathy and ecological management practices, including visits and dialogues with families about the use of drugs and its results;

c) Preparation and multiplication of homeopathic medicines to be provided or that are requested by the families in the laboratory that is next to the headquarters of CAPA;

d) Structuring small community homeopathic pharmacies, with transfer of basic medical kits to groups of interested farmers. The kits are made with the most used drugs, which can be multiplied;

e) Monitoring and evaluation of results with registration of drugs and cases treated with homeopathy. The monitoring is performed by technicians and in the register of specific records in the laboratory;

f) Continuing Education Performance in Homeopathy in Agriculture with 150 hours (monthly modules), in partnership with Unioeste and support of Itaipu, aiming to increase the number of professionals trained in homeopathy..

4 - ACHIEVEMENT

a) Approximately 90 professionals (technicians, agronomists, veterinarians, animal scientists) and farmers/trained in the two extension courses (2011 and 2013);

b) More than 60 basic courses for family farmers and settlers already made, resulting in approximately 900 farmers benefit. Of this total, approximately 600 families make constant use of homeopathy;

c) About 30 basic kits with various homeopathic medicines available and in use by family farmers and settlers in the basic community pharmacies;

d) Reduction of approximately 70% in herds treatment costs, especially in dairy farming: treatment of mastitis, diarrhea and parasites (ticks and worms).

e) Improvement in the quality of production. Production free of contaminants. In the case of milk, no disposal because homeopathy leaves no residue;

f) Extension of research and studies on the use of homeopathy in agriculture. In Unioeste eight scientific research focusing on homeopathy are currently in development;

g) Establishment of a study group and supporting the development of homeopathy in agriculture in western Paraná;

h) Participation in II International Conference of Homeopathy on Agriculture (September 2013 in Maringa/PR), with two lectures and one case report.

5 - REQUIRED RESOURCES

1) Trained human resources: In particular agricultural and livestock technicians and/or professionals of the agricultural sciences (agronomists, animal scientists, veterinarians etc) as well as farmers. Ideally, a mixed and multidisciplinary team. The size of the team will depend on the demand (public-served), but the ideal would be to start with at least 2 skilled people;

2) Infrastructure: For the infrastructure, we can use existing room or space, with size from 15 m2 and allowing small adjustments, i.e., dividing the space into two rooms: a location for cleaning and sanitizing of glassware and pipettes with a sink and a stove for sterilization; and other specific location for the preparation (multiplication and promotion) of homeopathic medicines and their storage and conservation.

3) Equipment and basic supplies needed: A dynamizer (equipment that boost the medication); oven for drying and sterilization of materials (glass works), water distiller, autoclave (sterilizer), alcohol meter (measuring the alcohol content), grain alcohol and various glassware for medicines.

6 - TRANSFER

The use of homeopathy in agriculture is much older than that reported practice. The merit of CAPA is in the fact of promote since 10 years ago the training and the use of homeopathy in an accessible and empowering way, structure a small laboratory for the preparation and multiplication of drugs, and, in partnership with several other organizations, promote courses on their principles and their use.

The practice has been used and successfully replicated in several contexts, groups and properties in western Paraná. Noteworthy are the cities of: Marechal Cândido Rondon, Mercedes, Pato Bragado, Toledo, Missal, Medianeira.

Several other entities and professionals advise farmers, research and systematize experiences on the use of homeopathy in agriculture in this region. The main ones are: The Institute Emater of Marechal Cândido Rondon (Marcia V. Toledo) and Missal (Ronaldo Fochesatto); the Biolabore (Vanice Fulber and Vilson Redel, and Unioeste Campus of Marechal C. Rondon (Prof. researcher José Renato Stangarlin).

7 -LESSONS LEARNED

a) The fact of the initiative (project) combine actions of training and technical assistance (monitoring) families;

b) The dedication of farmers who adopted the technology, the various experiences that have been doing and the good results achieved in animal and vegetal production;

c) The implementation of community basic pharmacies that have generated autonomy groups, leaders and producers;

d) Teamwork (CAPA) and the sum of institutional efforts (partnerships);

e) The existence of basic laboratory that enables the preparation and distribution of medicines at a low cost to farmers;

f) The performance of extension courses (deepening) that extended the number of trained professionals and farmers;

The main lesson learned is that with dedication and effort, you can develop and expand an efficient technology, in a participative and affordable way (low cost), without relying on large investments.

The main obstacle is the lack of technology and some initial distrust by both, professional (technical) and farmers. ;

8 - PRACTICE ORIGINALITY

The main Brazilian entities predecessors to CAPA in training/teaching, research and extension on the use of homeopathy in agriculture (of which we are aware) are:

- The Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), in particular the professor and researcher Vicente W. D. Casali;

- The State University of Maringá (UEM), through the Laboratory of Vegetal Homeopathy, coordinated by professor and researcher, Carlos Moacir Bonato;

- The Coopasul (Cooperative Small Ranchers of South Campinas), in particular the work of the veterinarian, Alexandre Mendonça;

- The Arenales Company through biologist, agricultural and veterinarian Maria do Carmo Arenales.

Note: We consider that the differential of this project reported here and that qualifies it as good practice is highlighted in paragraphs 3, 4 and 7 of this report, in particular its methodology: participative, inclusive, empowering and replicable.

There is the possibility of visiting the practice by appointment with 15 to 20 days in advance.

Number of visitors: 01-40.
